STEVE KEENE PAINTS COVERS FOR “MIDTERMS” VINYL RELEASE

Acclaimed artist Steve Keene, perhaps best-known for his iconic album art for bands like Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, and Silver Jews, has painted 7 different covers on chipboard sleeves containing the forthcoming lathe-cut 10” vinyl release of Midterms (out in August). The paintings include Keene’s interpretations of the EP’s original cover along with 6 images corresponding to each track on the release. (Edition of 50)

MIDTERMS DROPS ON 7/15

Tod Lippy’s third major release, a 6-song EP recorded with contributions from drummer Jeff Lipstein and cellist Serafim Smigelskiy, will be out in mid-July. “This is a disconcerting moment in history,” Lippy recently stated, “and these songs are my response to — and coping mechanism for — the craziness.” Read more about the EP here.

The third single from the 2021 album Yearbook was selected by photographer Tina Barney to serve as the soundtrack for her exquisite short video of Austin Butler, shot in conjunction with Barney’s photos of the actor in Vogue’s May 2022 issue. The sync-licensing deal was handled by MUSICdise.

“ASSORTED HITS 11” OUT NOW

“Assorted Hits 11,” the lead single from my forthcoming EP Midterms, is now on all digital platforms. The song reflects the guitar-driven and resolutely analog approach of the new EP, which will be out in June.

It’s inspired by the mixtapes I made in the 1980s of music by New Wave bands like The Smiths, Depeche Mode, and New Order, and it's also a paean to the way the best music can speak for us when it’s hard to find the courage to speak for ourselves.

“Assorted Hits 11” is also being released as a limited-edition cassingle (50 copies only) whose B-side features “After School,” an unreleased track produced by Kramer in 2021.

“The unapologetic and unpretentious way that Lippy invites listeners into his world is something more artists will hopefully aspire to do in the future.”MUSIC EXISTENCE

“Tod Lippy’s fascination with the basic elements of human existence that generally feel skipped over or accepted without question makes for a brilliantly human album.”VENTS

“Where has this uniquely insightful artist who creates dramatic, filmesque instrumental soundscapes behind his ruminations on an array of interesting subject matter been all your life? Delightfully witty, socially conscious and often gleefully incisive...”THE JW VIBE

“There’s a selfless approach to each song and the album feels like a personal letter hand-addressed from Lippy to his listeners.” — Colin Jordan, MEDIUM

“An exceptional sophomore record.” TAKE EFFECT

“MORE IN COMMON” PREMIERES ON StGA

“More in Common,” the second single release from Yearbook, received a premiere and review on the music blog Surviving the Golden Age. StGA editor wrote about the single, “Over a backdrop of gorgeous piano and atmospheric drums, Lippy’s reverbed vocals soar. With the track’s unique song structure and lo-fi recording, it sounds like a mix between Elton John and the Microphones. It is catchy but with weighty lyrics and a strong emotional pull — a triumph of both songwriting and musicianship.” Read the full review here.

“GOOD START REMIXED” LIMITED-EDITION RELEASED

“Good Start,” the lead track on Tod Lippy’s first album, Here We Are (2019), was inspired by a saying passed down to his father from his grandfather: “A good start means you’re half done.” Last year Lippy reached out to a range of musicians he respected to see if they might be willing to offer their own takes on the song. He ended up with submissions from Julian Lynch, Sonic Boom, Kramer, and Carl Stone. The edition ($7.50) includes a 5-panel, 4-color insert as well as a download card for high-quality mp3s of the four remixes and the original single.

10/16/20: “NAMES” RELEASED AS DIGITAL SINGLE, MUSIC VIDEO, AND LIMITED-EDITION VINYL

"Names" is the first single from the forthcoming album Yearbook. It is inspired by a lifelong obsession Lippy has had with spelling peoples' names correctly, but it also reflects a general desire on his part not only to connect with people in a deeper way — especially right now — but to recognize and celebrate difference, even if it's only a matter of one or two letters. "Names" is also being released on vinyl by the Toronto-based label We Are Busy Bodies. PURCHASE VINYL

“REMEMBER YOUR DOCTOR” SINGLE AND VIDEO OUT NOW

The second single from Here We Are hit all digital platforms on Thursday, September 26th. The track turns the boilerplate disclaimer found in the fine print of every prescription (“Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects”) into a potent, layered meditation on the precarious relationship between patient and doctor, life and death. Its accompanying video incorporates footage from three medically themed industrial films from the late ’50s and early ’60s housed in the acclaimed Prelinger Archives.
